Recently, Prof. Dr. Harald Zepp came back from Shanghai, where he visited partners at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (Tongji University), municipalities and companies (7 - 9 June 2018). The talks were scheduled in preparation of comparative research on ecosystem services in Shanghai and the Ruhr region. Greater Shanghai exhibits peri-urban areas awaiting future urban development as well as older districts that need restoration and restructuring after the translocation of steel factories. In both area types, in Germany and in Shanghai, enhancing ecosystem services is urgently needed, yet the challenges, planning and implementation schemes necessarily differ. The example of a community garden proves that greening the cities is a hot topic both for the civil society and municipalities in Shanghai.
The visit also served to get to know the new students who will enter the Double Degree Programme "Transformation of urban landscapes (TuL)" in October 2018. Eight incoming students from Shanghai will be welcomed in Bochum.
